Hyundai Safety Features Explored
Hyundai has a whole host of driver assist features that are designed to bring additional safety measures to your journey for both the occupants of your vehicle and other road users (including pedestrians).
Driver assist features are designed to provide assistance to the driver, rather than offer autonomous driving. These features offer peace of mind that the vehicle is acting like a second pair of eyes as you go about your day as normal.
When travelling in unfamiliar areas, these driver assist features will become incredibly handy, whether it's the road sign recognition, to keep your speed under control or the lane keep assist feature that will warn the driver of any imminent and unintentional movements across a lane as you try to navigate the new location.
Let’s take a look at the Hyundai safety features that you can expect when purchasing a new Hyundai model:

Blind Spot Collision Warning (BCW)
If you regularly travel on motorways or dual carriageways to get to work or to the shops, the Blind Spot Collision Warning system may be invaluable to you.
This system works by utilising the radar sensors that are mounted on the rear sides of the vehicle that spot vehicles to the side or behind.
If your vehicle starts to deviate from your current lane and a vehicle is spotted in your blind spot, an audible warning will sound so you can rectify your position.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
Utilising the camera mounted on the front windscreen, Lane Keeping Assist System will monitor the lines on the road. Should the car inadvertently deviate from the course of the road, the system will warn the driver via an audible tone or visual warning and apply counter steering to gradually guide the car back to a safe position.
This doesn’t activate when the indicator is activated as this suggests you made the movement voluntarily.
Available with: Hyundai i10, Hyundai i20, Hyundai i30, Hyundai i30 Tourer, Hyundai i30 Fastback, Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In, Hyundai Nexo, Hyundai Bayon
Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS)
The camera mounted in the front windscreen will monitor the road ahead for other vehicles and if the system thinks a collision is a possibility, a warning will be applied so the driver can react accordingly. If a collision is imminent, the brakes will be applied automatically.
This system can be configured to your requirements, so whether you want it to provide a warning only, meaning only you can apply the brakes or whether you want the full Active Assist system to be activated, whereby the system will apply the brakes as necessary.
You can also change the timing the warning is activated to suit your environment.
Available with: Hyundai i10, Hyundai i20, Hyundai i30, Hyundai i30 Tourer, Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Bayon
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
This system is ideal if you live on a busy street or regularly park in a busy car park as it assists you in reversing into traffic.
Utilising the rear view camera and an alert on the wing mirrors, Rear Cross Traffic Alert will check for any approaching traffic as your reverse out of a space. This system can detect traffic from up to 65 feet away, giving you a chance to react and brake accordingly.
Available with: Hyundai i30 Tourer, Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Kona N, Hyundai Kona Hybrid, Hyundai Kona Electric, Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In
Driver Attention Alert (DAA)
Most suited to those making long journeys, the Driver Attention Alert will monitor your driving as well as a number of other factors such as speed and time behind the wheel. If the system feels the driver needs to take a break, the system will send an alert to the driver.
Available with: Hyundai Kona
Smart Cruise Control (SCC)
In constant moving traffic, Smart Cruise Control will take away the manual work involved in changing speed as vehicles ahead slow or speed up.
Once programmed, if the vehicle in front slows, the Smart Cruise Control will slowly reduce the speed of your car to match the vehicle in front, whilst maintaining a safe distance. If the vehicle in front speeds back up, your vehicle will do the same, again with the safe distance maintained.
If the vehicle in front comes to a complete stop, so will your vehicle and will drive off when the vehicle in front does the same.
Available with: Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Hyundai Kona N, Hyundai Kona Hybrid, Hyundai Kona Electric, Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In
Highway Drive Assist (HDA)
Making long motorway driving easier, Highway Drive Assist works with Smart Cruise Control to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
If you take your hands off the steering wheel for a short time, a warning will appear on the cluster and can also automatically maintain speed to match the limit of the road you are on.
Available with: Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In
Remote Smart Park Assist (RSPA)
Helping drivers park their vehicle in tight spaces, Remote Smart Park Assist allows you to park in a space whilst you are outside of your vehicle.
Utilising a smart key, the driver can stand within 13 feet of the vehicle and activate the remove park feature. This will work in forward or reverse parking. The vehicle will travel up to 23 feet whilst the button is held down on the smart key.
Available with: Hyundai Nexo
Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM)
As the name suggests, the Blind Spot View Monitor will display the area in the driver's blind spot on a monitor inside the vehicle.
This allows you to see what may be approaching from behind before you change lanes, preventing collisions.
This feature, combined with Blind Spot Collision Warning, is ideal for those who do a lot of motorway driving, where changing lanes is a regular occurrence.
Available with: Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In, Hyundai Nexo
Lane Following Assist (LFA)
Lane Following Assist will activate when lane markings are detected on both sides of the vehicle. This will be visible on the information cluster with an illuminated green graphic.
Steering is gently adjusted to keep the vehicle central to the lane to prevent straying into another lane.
This system will deactivate if only one or no lane markings can be found or you activate your indicator.
